800 Athletes to compete at maiden Anambra Athletics Golden League
No fewer than 800 athletes including 400 students from 64 secondary schools in Anambra would compete in the maiden AFN/Anambra Athletics Golden League competition.
The competition has been scheduled to hold from June 10 to June 11.
Tony Nnacheta, the Anambra Youth and Sports Commissioner told a conference at the Rojenny Games Village, Oba on Sunday.
Nnacheta also said that the league would serve as hunting ground to discover talents for higher competitions.
He announced that Gov. Willie Obiano would use the opportunity provided by the meeting to formally inaugurate the “new Olympic standard Tartan Tracks” installed at the Rogeny Sports and Recreation Centre”.
Nnacheta said the 8-lane tartan tracks were valued at N80 million. He said the facility is IAAF-certified facility with a 10-year warranty.
He said that the competition would feature 20 track and field events.
Nnacheta, then urged stakeholders including heads of schools, parents and the media to embrace the programme and ensure its success.
The Commissioner for Education, Kate Omenugha said her ministry would mobilise students for the event, in spite of the fact that it would coincide with their mid-term break.
Omenugha said a lot were being done by the government to upgrade sporting facilities in schools in the state since combining sports and education is incorporated in the education policy of Anambra.
She called on wealthy Anambra people as well as old boys and girls associations to adopt schools nearest to them and explore ways they could support the provision of sports facilities.
Rommy Ezeonwuka, Managing Director of Rojenny Stadium where the tartan tracks were laid, said he is happy that the many opportunities in the stadium were being harnessed.
Ezeonwuka urged the ministries of sports and education to develop programmes that would promote effective use of the new facility.
