Tinubu’s wife snubs Saraki
The wife of a national leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and serving senator representing Lagos State, Remi Tinubu, snubbed the Senate President, Bukola Saraki on Wednesday.
Mr. Tinubu, an influential APC stalwart, is credited to have initiated the establishment of the party leading to its victory at the general polls which held in March 28 and April 11 2015.
He supported the candidacy of Ahmed Lawan and Femi Gbajabiamila for Senate President and Speaker of House of Representative respectively. His candidates, however, lost to Bukola Saraki and Yakubu Dogara, in a keenly contested election that saw a faction of the APC loyal to Messrs Saraki and Dogara merge with the PDP.
The emergence of the duo was greeted with harsh criticisms from the APC who labelled them treacherous and promised disciplinary action.
Also, the APC senators who were absent during the election and inauguration on Tuesday reluctantly accepted the leaders.
During the swearing in of the 28 absentee lawmakers on Wednesday, the newly emerged Senate President, Mr. Saraki, shook hands with the senators. When he stretched his hand to Mrs. Tinubu, she responded with a bow instead.
Some of the senators who were sworn in on Wednesday include George Akume representing Benue state, Ahmed Lawan representing Yobe north and Mrs. Tinubu.
The deputy senate president, Ike Ekweremadu, raised a motion that a message be sent to the President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, letting him know the presiding officers of the 8th Senate – Senate President, Bukola Saraki, and the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu.
He also raised a motion saying that six organisations be informed that a quorum of the senate has been assembled and are ready to receive communication.
The bodies are the African Union, Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, Inter-Parliamentary Union and the Economic Community of West African States parliament.
Others are the Pan African Parliament and the Association of Senate, Shoora, and the equivalent Council in Africa and the Arab World.
He also raised that a congratulatory message be sent to the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives.
The senate adjourned till June 23.
